In this international panel mid-career badass ladies discuss how they strategize their career development and the opportunities and barriers they perceive—on their way to becoming a tenured and full professor faculty member, and on their way moving forward. Panelists provide practical advice, useful tips, and share their experiences and recommendations with junior scholars. The panel creates a unique space for discussing the many expectations and challenges mid-career female academics face in different cultural settings.

How-to Public Intellectual (AKA, do I HAVE to Tweet?)
Featuring: Caty Borum Chattoo, Meredith Clark, Chris Larson, Safiya Umoja Noble, Kathleen Searles
This panel features a group of badass ladies who are successful public intellectuals in today’s media environment. From social media to op-eds, media interviews, and so much more, being a public intellectual can be a scary and daunting prospect. Panelists will discuss a range of recommendations and tips for engaging with media in order to draw attention to research of women scholars and elevate the profile of women in the communication field.

Listening to the Best: Roads not Taken and Roads to Take
Featuring: Susan Douglas, Regina Lawrence, Patricia Moy, Esther Thorson, Barbie Zelizer
In this panel, legends in the field will reflect on their experiences and the choices that got them where they are. Panelists will address topics including challenges for women in leadership, mentorship, and changes in the status of women in the field over time. We will also discuss where we go from here: What work remains to be done? What strategies can we devise to support women in the field?

Logistics/Location
Location: Marymount University's Ballston Center
Directions/suggested transport: We will be providing a shuttle bus to those who indicate they would like transportation to the event from the Hilton. There is no transport back, but we can help you find your way. Shuttle bus will board at 12 pm.
Other transport: Otherwise, best options for transport include a car-share (about 20-25 mins) or the Metro (25-45 mins) via Red Line to Metro Center and change to Orange Line/Silver Line Ballston. Map for Metro here.
